Foster Compass is a website for young people leaving foster care in North Carolina. They type what they need, in their own words, and get a real place to call: the number, the hours, what to say when someone picks up, and when it was last checked. No account, no name, nothing saved about them.

It is licensed to the counties and organizations that put it in front of young people, and it is free to every young person who uses it.

Every number is a real one

Most resource lists are built once and left to go stale. Ours is worked continuously: every resource is called and checked, and called again on a monthly cycle, so what a young person gets is a place that exists, takes people like them, and picks up the phone. Each card says when it was last checked. A record we have not reached yet says so plainly and tells them to call ahead, and nothing goes on the site without a source.

What we cover today, and how sure we are of each record, is public at fostercompass.org/coverage.

What you get

  • Your own door: a link like fostercompass.org/yourname, a poster for the wall, and wallet cards to hand out. A young person who comes through it sees your name on the first screen.
  • Your own numbers: how many came through your door, what they needed, and what nobody had an answer for. Never who. Counts under ten are withheld so a small number can never point at one person.
  • A one-page report for funders, built from those numbers, on one button.
  • A crisis floor that runs before anything else: a young person in danger sees 988 first, every time.

What it asks of you

Nothing to install and nothing to connect to. No account for your staff, and no training beyond one page of notes that comes with the kit. Print the poster, hand out the cards, and say one sentence: it gives you real numbers to call.

Talk to us

Email us with your organization's name, the county you serve, and what you would want from the numbers. We will come back with what Foster Compass would look like for you.

This address is for organizations. It is not a help line: a young person who needs something tonight should use the site, or call 211, any hour.
